 Curry's Spring Gobbler 2008
Congratulations to Curry for a really nice gobbler. The big bird weighed 21 lbs. 7 oz.,
11 1/4 inch beard and 1 inch spurs. | |
 Bowhunting 101 Revisited
A graduate of Penn State's prestigious bowhunting course a few years back, Tucker Clevenger, as it has been rumored, has applied for enrollment in a refresher course at the same university. This becoming necessary after a major blunder on a recent Bowhunting trip to the Shenandoah Valley. As personally witnessed by this writer, Tucker arrived at his treestand in the early morning darkness only to find no arrows in his quiver. In fact, there was no quiver to be found, a forgotten accessory on this early morning hunt. The quiver and arrows would be later found safely in the hunter's bow case. Luckily, Tucker had his .50 caliber muzzleloader with him as a backup just in case he saw a deer beyond his 22 yd effective range as calculated prior to season start according to the Penn State's Bowhunting course proficiency and ethics guidelines. Let's all wish Tucker good luck with the refresher course!!! | |

 Tracker Buck
Curry shot this smaller Buck after following a blood trail for several hours. The buck had been shot previously by another hunter and Curry was determined to salvage the Buck. Terrific job, Curry!! | |

The 2nd archery buck of the year weighed in at a whopping 205 pounds. Again, J.T. made a perfect shot that put the buck down within 60 yds. Now... why did it take soooo long to find him? Tracking skills ?? | |

This was a beautiful bird...20 lbs., 9 inch thick beard, and over 1 inch spurs. | |
 Curry's Roosted Gobbler
Curry insisted we try to put a gobbler to bed last evening. We didn't hear any gobbles, but did hear one lone turkey go to roost right before dark. We were in his bedroom and set up before dawn, Curry in front about 25 yds. When I could just barely make out the trees I gave a couple of tree yelps....no response...may be too cold...it was 34 degrees. After about 5 minutes I tree yelped again with the ole tube box call...... gobble-gobble-gobble....he answered and we were right on top of him....no more than 75 yds. About 10 minutes went by...no more gobbles....I call again..real easy and he gobblers..twice this time. I wait until I can see pretty good, then flap the wing call that Curry made to sound like a hen flying to the ground. I wait for the gobbler to fly down, but he doesn't. I'm thinking he may stay in the tree beings it's sooo cold..... and Curry has baseball practice at 8. I'm getting impatient, so I call real softly, then, after a few minutes, down flies the gobbler, almost right over Curry to a field to his left. I call again and soon Curry has a good 25 yd shot...BANG.
The bird never moved....Curry's new Remington 870 and # 6's did the job. The bird weighed in at 20 lbs. had 1 inch spurs, but only a 5 inch beard, very thick. It was not one of the four long bearded turkeys we had seen earlier. He must have been the fifth turkey we had heard previously. Anyway Curry got to baseball practice on time.

 Muzzleloader 2005
For muzzleloader season Curry decided to move his treestand to a new location that gave him more visibility between two scrapes. The time spent payed off as Curry took his first mature 8-pointer at 7 am opening day. | |
 Good Samaritan Buck
After Ron helped Curry drag his buck out of the woods, he was rewarded with this nice 10-pointer only a few minutes later.... a great experience for father and son. | |

In the afternoon Tucker decided that Curry's stand must be the lucky one. He was right on as that location produced another nice buck for Tucker. | |

 Canada Bear Camp....Spring, 2005
Bear camp this year was located 70 miles north of Fort Coulonge, Quebec. It was a late spring and the bears were very unpredictable. Most in camp saw bear, but only one bear harvested. | |

 Curry's 1st Gobbler...April 2, 2005
Curry has been hunting spring gobblers for 8 years. There have been many close encounters during that time, but something would always happen to cause things to go wrong. On this particular morning everything went right... a very happy young hunter for sure!! | |
